It seems the Volkswagen Golf has a future after all - as an EV

Long thought to have had its days numbered by the diminishment of the internal combustion engine, it now appears that the Golf nameplate will actually persist in the house of Wolfsburg.
The somewhat surprising news was broken by Thomas Schafer, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Volkswagen, in an interview with Autocar magazine at the recent Los Angeles Motorshow.
Thomas Schafer, COO of Volkswagen, has stated that the ID.3 was not intended to be the Golf's successor It also goes against the industry's long-standing (unspoken) impression that the Volkswagen ID.3 would eventually replace the Golf.
Calling Golf and GTI "iconic brand names", Schafer noted that it would "be crazy to let them die and slip away".
Schafer was also of the opinion that the ID.3 and Golf could co-exist in Volkswagen's product lineup, stating that the former "has never been a successor to the Golf", and was more like a Golf Plus. An electrified Golf could potentially be called the 'ID. Golf' in similar vein to the name of the firm's revived Kombi bus.
On the other hand, it is unclear how GTI will be assimilated, since performance variants of the ID. range thus far have been labelled 'GTX'.
This is not the first noteworthy revelation that Schafer has made in recent months. Just weeks ago, the Volkswagen chief also announced the return of conventional push-buttons (in favour of touch capacitative ones) in a LinkedIn post, in order to meet the desires of the brand's customers.
Nonetheless, the use of historic nameplates - long associated with combustion engines - for fully-electric models remains an unwieldy issue, especially among longtime fans. Volkswagen's ID. line-up, meanwhile, continues to find fans; deliveries recently crossed the 500,000 mark.
