First introduced in 2001, the Honda Jazz (also known as Fit in some countries or the local Parallel Imported (PI) model) became an immediate hit in Singapore.
Now into its third generation, the compact hatchback has been further enhanced with even greater versatility, fresh styling, a more dynamic and refined driving experience, and substantially upgraded technology and luxury features.
Styling is right out of the fun hatchback sketchbook with sharp lines, despite a slab sided look accentuating a sporty profile. Plus, the way the window line sweeps up towards the rear gives the new Jazz a little more attitude.
With class-leading interior space and versatility, courtesy of its centrally-mounted fuel tank and ingenious ULTRA seats, the Jazz epitomises smart functionality with spacious and comfortable seating for five and the ability to carry voluminous cargo, including long and tall items with its 363-litre boot. |
|
The Jazz's fun-to-drive character includes performance and the new Jazz increases the fun factor with major advances to its powertrain. Two new Earth Dreams Technology engines significantly increases power, torque and throttle response and the newly developed Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with G-Shift Control increase both performance and fuel efficiency.
The third generation Honda Jazz continues to deliver the balance of practicality and personality that made the first two generations so lovable. Together with a new face and some good gear, we can safely say the Jazz is back in vogue and that is also why it is the compact hatchback of the year. |

Since it arrived on scene in 2004, the Mazda3 has been quite a game changer, quickly establishing itself as one of the most popular mid-sized cars on the market. Thus, it doesn't come as a surprise that the third and latest generation Mazda3 has big expectations.
Everything about the all new Mazda3 will entice people to get more involved with it. Undoubtedly influenced by the sleek and swoopy Mazda6, the Mazda3 has its rivals, such as the Subaru Impreza and Volkswagen Golf beaten in the styling department.
Behind this appeal is Mazda's 'KODO: Soul of Motion' design theme that is inspired by the beauty and power of nature.
Inside the Mazda3, the Japanese carmaker has addressed the outgoing model's shortcomings with a modern interior that has more features including a new optional head-up display (Deluxe trim). |
|
Retaining the same wheelbase as its sedan brethren, the Mazda3 hatchback does not compromise on room for passengers, with plenty of space in the back for three adults to sit comfortably as well as a pretty decent luggage compartment of 314 litres.
Handling has been traditionally Mazda's strength and the new Mazda3 is no exception to the rule. Always a blast to drive, the Mazda3's nimbleness and faithful linear responsiveness has evolved to a previously unseen degree of sophistication.
Mazda's 1.5-litre SkyActiv engine, which produces more power and torque than the old 1.6-litre engine is mated to a smooth SkyActiv transmission and the combination ensures linear power is delivered directly to the front wheels while also contributing to significantly improved fuel economy.
There's a lot to like about the new Mazda3, with its handsome looks, sharp drive and smart cabin. Just like how the Mazda6 is a superior car to its predecessors, so is the stylish and very smart new Mazda3, who takes the fight right to its rivals. |

Audi launched the premium compact segment with the A3 in 1996 and now the third generation of the successful model is ready at the starting line.
The seamless integration of Audi's single-frame grille provides a focal point that creates a continuous theme with the sleeker headlamps that house the ever-contemporary daytime running lights. As a result, the A3 Sportback is tauter, leaner and sharper than before - a feat that's accomplished without losing its identity
It's not all about the looks for the A3 Sportback. At 1,225kg, the car is now 90kg lighter than before, thanks to Volkswagen Group's MQB platform, which minimises the use of materials by introducing rationality across various platforms that share engine orientation.
The growth in the A3 Sportback's size sees an extension of 58mm in its wheelbase and while it is still not the best in its class, there's marginally more knee and legroom for rear passengers now compared to the outgoing model. |
|
What's best in its segment, though, is its boot space. At 380 litres, the A3 Sportback boasts more capacity compared to its rivals. Despite space being one of the key factors in this hatchback segment, the most impressive element of the car remains to be its clean, clear and concise cabin layout.
The completely redesigned interior of the Audi A3 appeals with the horizontal lines of an instrument panel that appears to float, trendsetting quality of materials and workmanship as well as clear ergonomics.
Equipped with a chassis that is tuned for a sporty and agile driving style, combined with a range of powerful yet highly efficient engines, it's clear that Audi has gone to a certain extent to produce a car that, by a modest margin, is one of the best in its class. |

The new A3 Sportback is leagues ahead of its predecessor, so it is no surprise the same can be said of the S3 Sportback as well.
Audi's ultra lightweight design keeps the weight of the S3 Sportback to an impressively low level and thanks to its combination with the powerful 2.0-litre TFSI engine, drivers can enjoy an outstandingly agile yet highly efficient ride.
The high-performance 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 280bhp and 380Nm of torque, responds immediately to the driver's wishes and boasts a sportily sonorous sound.
The powerplant provides power and exemplary efficiency alike by relying on many new technologies, ranging from dual injection through the Audi valvelift system and an exhaust manifold integrated within the cylinder head to innovative thermal management. |
|
Equipped with the six-speed S-tronic gearbox, power delivery is smooth and serious without apparent effort. Its broad power band can be worked however drivers like and it'll always deliver the goods with a sense of occasion. When pushed to the metal, the S3 Sportback sprints from 0 to 100km/h in just five seconds flat.
Equipped with quattro permanent all-wheel drive and a redesigned multi-plate clutch, this hot hatch can accelerate more quickly and safely when exiting a corner. At the same time, drivers can adapt the character of the S3 Sportback to their individual wishes using the standard Audi drive select.
The Audi S3 Sportback is one hot hatch many drivers will like to have in their parking lot permanently. It's a car that doesn't just excel in performance figures and style, but also in the overall driving experience. With a perfect blend of refinement and practicality, the S3 Sportback is certainly one of the most desirable in its class. |

Mercedes-Benz's new range of compact models has been attracting much attention in the automotive industry for the past couple of years and it comes as no surprise that the new C-Class (W205) does the same.
The new C-Class is also the first model to utilise Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) platform, which will go on to serve under the rest of Mercedes' larger rear-wheel drive models too. It is no surprise then that the new C-Class is a resolute expression of the current Mercedes-Benz style, which is also evident in the S-Class.
Growing appreciably, the new C-Class' organic styling clearly sets itself apart from its predecessor as well as its competitors. The varied interplay between lines, edges, convex and concave surfaces creates vibrant and exciting contrasts across the entire vehicle. |
|
The strong visual impact of the new C-Class' exterior is continued in the interior. A high-quality finish and materials, cultured sports styling, a tasteful colour scheme and intelligent details create an atmosphere of easy poise and assurance.
The C-Class is equipped with a range of strong engines that allow it to achieve a sustainable increase in efficiency and dynamic performance. Via the new AGILITY SELECT function, drivers can now choose between five modes, which make the car more comfortable or sportier to drive, depending on the driver's mood.
But regardless of the mode it is in, the C-Class rewards its driver with a refined drive. Not only does the C-Class look like a smaller S-Class, it also feels like one on the go. As a package, the new C-Class is a tremendous contender in this ever-popular segment and one that its rivals are likely to and should be wary of. |

Toyota has sold some 40 million units of the legendary Corolla Altis since it became the best-selling car three decades back. While it has undergone a series of design changes for the past 10 generations, it's only with this latest iteration that it can be claimed as a revolution rather than an evolution.
The new Altis is easily the sleekest of the lot, with a swept back windshield, sporty chrome strips, redesigned bumper and new headlamps, giving it a Continental flavour that sets it apart from rivals such as the Kia Forte K3 and the Mazda3 Sedan.
Thus, the Altis is no longer as instantly recognisable as it used to be. It has finally shed its boring image that will have no qualms attracting the younger and trendier audience. From the distinct front grille to the boldly sculpted panels, the new Altis' dynamic design language captures attention wherever you go. |
|
Tweaks have also been made to give the Altis' interior a classier and more comfortable finish. Other than higher quality leather and plastics, the instrument panel is also prettier and more futuristic than before.
More significantly, the wheelbase has been stretched by 100mm which translates to more legroom for rear passengers. A flat floor bed for the middle rear seat helps to provide more space too.
More importantly, every aspect that contributes to performance has been improved, resulting in a car that puts a smile on its driver on the road. Powered by a 1.6-litre Dual VVT-I engine paired to a new seven-speed CVT-i transmission, the Altis pulls eagerly from low revs as it moves forward with the slightest tap of the throttle. At the same time, it returns a remarkable fuel economy of 12km/L, enhancing its economical appeal. |

While the old Honda City was known as a reliable people mover that offered the masses affordable motoring, the new one is no different. Based on first impressions, the new car looks more dynamic and premium with its new chiselled overalls. Featuring more sculptured body panels, the new City is slightly longer than before. In fact, it has the longest wheelbase in its class, edging over the Toyota Vios and Nissan Almera.
Inside, the new City is a notch up from the previous in terms of fit and finish. The design of its dashboard and the host of modern features such as engine start/stop button, paddle shifters on the steering wheel, a touchscreen infotainment system that also has Bluetooth connectivity for handsfree and music streaming functions, allow the City to feel more upmarket than it is. Other highlights include an especially spacious rear cabin and a huge 536-litre boot. |
|
Motivating the new City is the 1.5-litre four-cylinder plant from the predecessor that has been largely carried over albeit with revisions. Ditching the conventional five-speed automatic, the City receives a new CVT gearbox with a seven-speed overriding function. While not the best gearbox for the keen driver, it certainly makes the car more efficient, as compared to the older car. Even without trying hard at it, we recorded a fuel economy of 15km/L.
In conclusion, the City is a well-rounded family sedan for those on a tighter budget. The extensive list of equipment on the new City plus its impressive running gear gives it a compelling preposition which could very well edge it over its closest rivals. |

The mid-sized sedan segment has always been fiercely competitive in Singapore, with capable cars such as the Toyota Camry, the Mazda6 and the Honda Accord all fighting it out to see who is the best.
While that may sound like quite a challenge for Kia, the carmaker has yet to disappoint. When the Kia Optima came to Singapore in early 2011, it possessed a rather gorgeous styling that managed to place the marque's design capabilities at the forefront. With the latest update, the Kia K5 brings about freshened styling and handy features that will easily put some of the European makes to shame.
For starters, new fog lamps and LED daytime running lights are now nicely incorporated with the headlamps. Moving inside, the cabin is classy and relatively understated. A new steering wheel that comes with audio controls lifts the sportiness level up a notch. Elsewhere, the car comes with useful features such as ventilated seats with memory options (excellent for our climate), and an eight-speaker Infinity audio system, among others. |
|
Fitted with a new four-cylinder 2.4-litre block producing 177bhp and 231Nm of twisting force, the Optima K5 is paired with a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic gearbox. Getting around in the car is never a chore with the well-judged ride and good noise insulation. While not exactly the type of car to be hurried around, the keen driver will not be too disappointed with its mildly eager turn-in and good control of the body roll.
The Kia Optima K5 is a game changer in this segment. With the abundance of interior features, together with its striking sheet metal, it is easily one of the better buys as compared to its rivals. |

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan. One of the world's most widely used models serving as a taxi due to its reliability and spacious interior. While most owners would not be too happy to be associated with the E-Class being a taxi, it is probably the best way to acknowledge its competency in the executive sedan class.
The facelifted car now sports more aggressive bumpers and new LED headlamps - with a pair of optional arrow-head daytime running lights combining modernity with familiarity that will not put off any existing customers. Changes to the taillights give the rear an overall design that's undoubtedly sleeker and more elegant.
Inside, the E-Class is arguably the most spacious in its class. It will swallow five adults with their luggage easily although the middle rear passenger will find himself fighting for leg space with the transmission tunnel. Also, the E-Class' 540 litres of luggage capacity is even more generous than the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6. Build quality is on par with the rest of the class too and owners will get the feeling the car will easily outlast its 10-year COE lifespan. |
|
One of the highlights of the facelifted E-Class is its new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot powerplant. Replacing the slightly coarse old 1.8-litre turbo, the new unit feels much smoother and stronger throughout the rev range. Having sampled both the E200 and E250, the E250 is the sweeter unit. Those who want even more power can go for the E300 BlueTEC Diesel hybrid, which combines a diesel engine and an electric motor that allows for some real world frugality.
Generations over generations, the Mercedes Benz E-Class exemplifies excellence, putting itself in a class of its own. With this facelifted version, the enhancement done to this car is so good that even existing customers should not look elsewhere. |

It is not hard to figure out why the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the best luxury sedan of the year. With Mercedes-Benz giving it all its know-how into the S-Class, we are not surprised it is head and shoulders above the rest of its class.
Compared to the previous generation, the current S-Class (codenamed W222) appears to be more dignified and athletic. But the S-Class is more that just improved looks. The headlamps, for starters, have over 110 LEDs while the taillights consist of some 70 LEDs (excluding rear fog lamps). It is also the first car in the world to do without a single light bulb.
Inside, the classic-looking two-spoke steering wheel plus two high-resolution 12.3-inch TFT colour displays strike you first when you open the door. One of them replaces the instrumental cluster to give a cleaner overall feel. Lots of leather and matching pillows on the rear seats make sure you feel as comfortable as it can be. |
|
With a range of petrol, diesel and petrol-hybrid variants to choose from, one will be spoiled for choice when it comes to a drivetrain decision. Having driven the petrol-hybrid S400L and the S350L BlueTEC, we can safely say that both complement the S-Class's refinement.
While we did not get to sample its highly acclaimed Magic Body Control system which scans the road ahead and adjusts its suspension to minimise bumps and ruts, the standard air suspension is easily on par with the best in class.
The S-Class is arguably a car that's more enjoyable at the back seat. But we reckon otherwise. With its groundbreaking technologies, it almost feels like the S-Class is looking out for your well-being in all directions. |

With urban 'off-roaders' garnering more likes than before, the Hyundai Tucson is our SUV of the year. Recently facelifted with a new headlamp design that gives its pretty face a more endearing appeal, the rear lights also get an update too with some LEDs included in the light cluster.
Inside, you get lots of equipment considering its price. Highlights include a USB port for mobile devices, dual-sunroof, reverse camera and cruise control.
While close scrutinising will reveal hard plastics in the lower part of the dashboard, the Tucson can be forgiven given its price. Overall interior quality is on par with its peers and the Tucson is just as spacious as the rest of its rivals. |
|
In this latest guise, the Tucson receives a new block underneath the hood. The 'NU' spec unit may be slightly less powerful than before (151bhp vs 166bhp), but it claims a better fuel economy of close to 12km/L. Most of the time, the Tucson feels quicker than what the 11.5-second century sprint would suggest.
With the Tucson honed and perfected with each revision, we can now say it is no doubt one of the best SUVs in its class. |

BMW has always been one of the few brands out there that always made sure the driver gets out of his car with a smile at the end of the journey. So, when they launched their first SUV in 1999 with the first generation X5, it was no exception and it received rave reviews as one of the best handling SUVs in the market.
Fast forward 15 years later, the third generation has grown larger and now looks classier inside out. Compared to the second generation, the new X5 has a more contemporary look at the front with its new headlights while a set of widened redesigned taillights, and bumper-integrated exhaust pipes at the rear complete the athletic image.
The interior of the new X5 is a huge improvement with its clean and fuss-free presentation. Horizontal lines and layered surfaces give a sense of width and depth, emphasising the available space of an SUV. |
|
Soundly placed controls offer a superb driving position to give the driver a clear vantage point. Bigger families might want to specify their X5 with seven seats too for added practicality.
All in all, the new X5 is a more complete car than its predecessor - it's a sharp drive, but couples more maturity and refinement with a much more premium-feeling cabin. If you find yourself looking for a luxurious urban dweller and a capable off-roader, this might be the car you are looking for. |

|
The Macan is the first compact SUV from Porsche. The Stuttgart automaker might be better known for the 911 sports car, but it seems like they have spared no effort in making the Macan as exciting as possible.
There are a total of four variants, each delivering different levels of performance. The range-topping Macan Turbo packs a 3.6-litre turbocharged V6, which churns out 400bhp and 550Nm of torque. Besides being one of the most powerful in its segment, the Macan Turbo is the quickest accelerating with a 4.8-second century sprint timing.
Helping the Macan unleash its performance is Porsche's renowned PDK dual-clutch gearbox, which is fitted as standard on every variant of the Macan. With seven ratios to work with, the PDK is more decisive and intuitive than the gearboxes found in its rivals. |
|
But what is most impressive about the compact SUV is how it attacks corners with pin-point precision. Despite its taller ride height, the Macan's handling is almost sports car-like. Compared to the Audi SQ5 and BMW X4, the Macan is the most involving to drive.
Also, ride comfort in the Macan is not compromised by the sporty driving characteristic. Thanks to the clever chassis control system (Porsche Active Suspension Management, or PASM) that allows three different levels of damping, the Macan's body roll is kept in check.
While we held some scepticism when Porsche promised that the Macan will deliver sports car-like dynamics, we were soon convinced. |

Citroen's new family MPV features an eye-catching new design that immediately distinguishes itself from its rivals. It also uses clever light design, such as LEDs in the front and rear lights, to lend it a striking and stronger identity.
With a glass greenhouse of 5.7 square metres, the Grand C4 Picasso has the largest glass area of all MPVs. This is coupled with a large Zenith windscreen to make the cabin feel more airy and spacious than its competitors.
On the inside, the Grand C4 Picasso's instrument has been completely overhauled and now has a 12.0-inch High Definition screen, which replaces the conventional tachometer and speedometer gauges. |
|
This is paired with a 7.0-inch touchpad, which controls the car's air-conditioning and infotainment system. By far, the Grand C4 Picasso has one of the most futuristic and impressive-looking displays we have come across.
While Citroen has paid much attention to make the MPV a good-looking one, both in and out, it hasn't made any compromise in terms of practicality. The Grand C4 Picasso is fitted with one of the smallest engines of its class, a 1.6-litre turbocharged diesel. On top of tax savings, the powerplant also has an impressive fuel economy of 16km/L.
It is this ensemble of groundbreaking exterior and interior designs, practicality and low running costs, which make the Grand C4 Picasso a surprise and a winner in its class. |

From looks alone, you could easily tell that Honda's latest family MPV has been thoroughly overhauled. The new car has grown in all dimensions, particularly in its height with 150mm added. This grants the new Odyssey a bigger cabin, which can fit up to eight people in comfort.
Available in two trims, an eight-seater and a more luxurious seven-seater, the Odyssey's core selling point is its plush and serene cabin. The luxury variant has a 2-2-3 seating arrangement, with the centre row now featuring ottoman seats that are some of the most comfortable seats in its segment.
The Odyssey also comes fitted with an array of technological features, such as an all-round camera system that will help drivers navigate through tight spaces and parking lots. |
|
To make the Odyssey more comfortable, Honda has equipped the new car with the new Earth Dreams CVT transmission, which swops cogs seamlessly and is more fuel efficient than the five-speed automatic found in the outgoing model.
In the powerplant department, the new Odyssey is fitted with a 2.4-litre engine that delivers 174bhp and 225Nm of torque. While not big on numbers, the unit feels relatively punchy on the move and it's more fuel efficient than its rivals at 9.4km/L.
Among its competitors, it is the Odyssey that strikes the best balance between comfort, performance and practicality. |

Since its launch, BMW's 4 Series has received rave reviews about it being an all-rounded sports car. Preceding the 3 Series Convertible, the new compact drop-top receives a slew of unique treatment on top of its new 4 Series moniker, which make it more appealing than before.
For starters, it has also grown in almost all dimensions (26mm longer and 43mm wider) compared to its predecessor, which gives it a sportier stance and greater on-road presence.
Like its forebearer, the 4 Series Convertible has a folding hard-top, which offers better practicality and cabin insulation compared to its rivals, the Audi A5 Cabriolet and Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet with their conventional folding fabric roofs. |
|
The structure of the folding top has also been strengthened, so that it can now be operated at speeds of up to 18km/h, and will complete the operation in 20 seconds. The design of the hard-top has also been refined, so that the Convertible has a flowing roofline when the top is up, which can be easily mistaken for its Coupe counterpart.
This means the 4 Series Convertible is as good-looking with its roof up or stowed - an achievement that few other convertibles are able to lay claim to. |

In fact, Mercedes' latest compact coupe may even be mistaken as an all new model. For starters, the coupe gets new designs on the front and rear facets, which sports distinctive LED lights. The aesthetic appeal is further enhanced with the optional AMG kit, adding a sportier and more aggressive stance to the car. |
|
In terms of drivetrains, the E-Class Coupe also receives a new engine range. Premium Performance Coupe of the year Jaguar F-TYPE Coupé |

|
|
Jaguar's all new sports car, the F-TYPE, has stolen the limelight on numerous occasions with its soul-stirring looks and potent performance. Following the success of the F-TYPE Convertible, the F-TYPE Coupé continues to attract eyeballs with its sleek and sexy design - with even greater performance.
The hard-top's added rigidity, coupled with the addition of a more hardcore 'R' variant, makes the Coupe's appeal even more irresistible. With a 5.0-litre V8 that delivers a stonking 543bhp and 680Nm of torque, the F-TYPE Coupé R easily outruns its segment rivals - the Porsche 911 Carrera and BMW M4. |
|
While 'value-for-money' is seldom associated with high-end sports cars, the F-TYPE Coupé is more 'bang-for-buck' compared to the Porsche 911 Carrera, as an equivalent 911 variant (the 911 Turbo with 520bhp) will set you back $200k more than the F-TYPE.
Another trait that enhances the F-TYPE's appeal is its soundtrack. The V8 delivers an aural sensation that its rivals are unable to match up to.
It is the careful blend of pretty looks, performance and sensory experience that gives the F-TYPE Coupé a greater emotional appeal - putting it at the top of its segment. |

The GLA-Class is the fourth and latest model in Mercedes' new compact lineup, which comprises of the A-Class, B-Class and CLA-Class. At the same time, it extends Mercedes' SUV portfolio with a new compact model that will appeal with its smaller engine and lower carbon emissions (which translates into cheaper tax) while retaining the rugged off-road looks.
To cater to different customer needs, four variants of the GLA-Class are offered - including two petrol and one diesel model. Besides offering a greater variety of models compared to its rivals, the GLA-Class also deserves mention for its range of technological features, such as the 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission and various safety features. |
|
With space for five adults on board and a boot space of 421 litres, the GLA-Class is also one of the most practical. In comparison, the Citroen DS4's boot stands at 359 litres, while the V40 Cross Country has 335 litres of load lugging space.
Topping the model range is the GLA 45 AMG, which has a 2.0-litre lump that packs 360bhp and 450Nm of torque. The engine, the same unit found in the A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG, is the most powerful in its class. This gives the GLA the edge to outperform rivals in its class.
With greater utility and a wider range of variants to suit different needs, the GLA-Class deserves the position at the top of its segment. |

Hybrid of the year Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid |
|
|
|
Comparing this hybrid to the rest of the other cars in this category, the Panamera S E-Hybrid supersedes not only in its clean sheet metal but also its performance. More relevantly, in real life driving conditions, this car managed 15.4km/L. Putting into consideration that the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 develops 333bhp and 440Nm of torque, and combines with the electric module for a maximum output of 416bhp and 590Nm of torque, the fuel consumption is nothing short of amazing. The S-Class, on the other hand, only returned 6km/L during our time with it.
Part of its efficiency can be credited to its 'E-Power' mode, which is an electric-only driving mode that allowed us to go for another 22km without sipping on its fuel. Also, this Grand Tourer can be driven in full-electric mode to speeds of up to 135km/h - way past our local speed limits. Thus, this Porsche is more than capable to be driven purely on electricity in Singapore. |
|
Since we're talking about the performance figures, this plug-in hybrid will sprint from nought to 100km/h in just 5.5 seconds. That is quicker than the boyracer's WRX and just half a second off the pace compared to the more compact Audi S3 sedan, which is clear to say that it's the fastest in this Hybrid Category.
Hybrid power aside, this car still has the option to unleash a sports car-like potency on the tarmac. When the 'Sport' mode is activated, one jab at the accelerator will work both the combustion engine and the electric module in tandem to launch this hybrid hero in a ferocious manner that defies its eco-friendly identity. |

Results were close for this one. With nicely sculpted cars like the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe and the futuristic-looking Citroen C4 Picasso, the Editorial Team had a hard time concluding the winner.
We finally decided on the Audi A3 Sedan here because of several reasons that are unique to the car. For starters, this sedan isn't just a design with an added butt from the A3 Sportback. While both cars are based on the same platform, the A3 Sedan doesn't share a single body panel with its hatchback sibling. In other words, while most hatchbacks don't usually grow a boot gracefully, Audi has done well in attaching the bigger butt without coming across as a mere 'joined' formula. |
|
It may be a simple-looking car compared to the Jeep Cherokee but we cannot deny the fact that the nicest things in life are best enjoyed with a touch of simplicity.
As for this category, we don't just consider the exterior but the interior as well. And when it comes to cabin quality, Audi will no doubt beat its peers hands down, thanks to the terrific attention to detail, top notch materials used and excellent fit and finish. There is no doubt that 'faultless' remains to be an apt word to describe the design of the A3 Sedan. |

City Car of the year BMW i3 Electric |
|
|
|
Not only is BMW the segment leader when it comes to its sedans, it is also one of the few carmakers to have a pure-electric production-ready city car. For starters, the BMW i3 is the perfect car to roam around a city like Singapore, thanks to its zero emissions and compact dimensions of 3,999mm x 1,775mm x 1,578mm (L x W x H).
The distinctive and avant garde styling helps with its lifestyle image, too. Its muscular haunches and layered exterior make the i3 look like a concept car driven straight off the design headquarters, with a good mix of brash and bold, where you'll see an intersection of shapes, straight lines and curves.
Even the loft-inspired cabin makes it a winner in this category. The Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) and wood adorning the dash and other parts of the interior give the car a raw but environmental-friendly look while the free-floating iDrive screen that takes centre stage further enhances the car's cool factor. It's a very calming environment here, with a strong sense of modernity. |
|
On the go, there's barely any of the mechanical whines or electrical buzzes often associated with electric cars. But it doesn't mean it's a slouch. The i3 accelerates briskly and smoothly off the line. With a peak torque of 250Nm sent straight to the rear wheels, the acceleration feels better than most electric cars we've tried. In fact, the 0-100km/h sprint is dispatched in just 7.2 seconds - similar to the MINI Cooper S hot hatch.
Make no mistakes. This is a good car. It's focused on city dwellers and younger drivers who share a different taste for cars compared to the generation of their parents and that makes it a very special machine. |

City Sports Car of the year MINI Cooper S |
|
|
|
The difference between a City Car and a City Sports Car lies with its performance. While the winner of the City Car category, the BMW i3, is cute, compact and cool, the champion of the City Sports Car has all of those characteristics plus power.
Measuring 3,850mm long, 1,727mm wide and 1,414mm tall, the MINI Cooper S, our City Sports Car of the year, may be bigger than its predecessor. But it doesn't mean it's inappropriate as a city car. With its funky colours in and out and an everlasting 'retrolicious-classic' silhouette, the MINI Cooper S is right at home around the cityscape. |
|
More impressively, with its 2.0-litre powerplant churning out 192bhp and 280Nm of torque from the word go, this hot hatch will zip in and out of traffic effortlessly. Having a direct and well-weighted steering wheel helps a lot in this case too. Such a behaviour gives the car an instant appeal on the road and more so when its unrestrained character is enchanting enough to make you indulge it.
In a way, this car has already grown up and is no longer 'raw'. It rides smoother (thanks to wider front and rear tracks of 32mm and 24mm respectively), provides better performance figures, is better upholstered and comes with more space. And if you ask us, we say it's the perfect city sports car. |

Honda Jazz Price: POA | Built In: Japan | Launched in: 2014 |
|
People's Pick of the year Honda Jazz |
|
|
|
Now into its third generation, the Honda Jazz remains to be a gem in everyone's hearts and minds as it builds on its existing strengths. And it is easy to see why, too, thanks to the car's back-to-basics approach to driving fun and affordable running costs.
As with its predecessor, it sticks to being a naturally aspirated hatchback. What has changed, though, is its output. While the previous 1.5-litre engine in its predecessor was capable of 120bhp and 145Nm of torque, the same lump under the hood of the new Jazz has been revised to produce 8bhp more and 10Nm more torque.
The powerplant is mated to a new Earth Dreams CVT gearbox, replacing the five-speed automatic gearbox of its predecessor, and the transmission's wide spread of ratios helps it to be quite punchy off the mark. The intelligent gearbox also drops the revs down as low as possible when cruising, which helps fuel economy. Our clocked average of 13.8km/L over our test drive isn't quite near Honda's official figure of 18.9km/L, but it's appreciably impressive. |
|
More importantly, the zippy city car shows more enthusiasm for twists and turns than its predecessor. Credit also goes to the car's weight reduction of 40kg over the former model. This makes the Jazz very easy and fun to drive, and a very enjoyable one as a city dweller.
The third generation Honda Jazz continues to deliver the balance of practicality and personality that made the first two generations so lovable. Together with a new face and better driveability, this car is a well-deserved winner for the People's Pick category. |

Car of the Year Honda Jazz |
|
|
|
The Sgcarmart Editorial Team appreciates simplicity and back-to-basics and the Honda Jazz embodies just these qualities. But this isn't the only reason why the Honda Jazz bagged this year's Car of the Year award.
The third generation Jazz that you see here has grown significantly in its length by 35mm compared to its predecessor, allowing for more space in its cabin. Together with a 30mm wheelbase stretch over the outgoing model, settling into the new Jazz is easier than before. Rear legroom, in particular, is especially generous and may even put some mid-sized sedans to shame.
The intelligent seating solution helps to maximise interior space for accommodating people and all sorts of stuff - from bicycles to potted plants - with four modes of configuration. Cargo capacity in the rear has increased as well, from 337 litres in the outgoing model to 363 litres in the new Jazz, ensuring that all luggage and groceries are well taken care of. |
|
On the go, the Jazz will not set the roads on fire but it won't disappoint either. With 128bhp and 155Nm of torque sent to the front wheels seamlessly through the new Earth Dreams CVT gearbox, this humble hatchback is refreshingly smooth and willing even with maximum attendance on board. The intelligent gearbox also drops the revs down as low as possible when cruising, which helps fuel economy. Our clocked average of 13.8km/L over our test drive isn't quite near Honda's official figure of 18.9km/L, but it's appreciably impressive.
More relevantly and notably, the Jazz shows more enthusiasm for twists and turns than its predecessor, changing direction easily but without much body roll. This makes it very easy and fun to drive, and a very enjoyable one as a city dweller.
To us, a fast car doesn't equate to fun and a fun car is, admittedly, more important than being fast. The Honda Jazz is just that. It's fun and carefree as a car and not many cars can live up to this. |

Subaru WRX STI Price: $192,800 - $195,800 | Built In: Japan | Launched in: 2014 |
|
SGCM's Top Viewed Model of the year Subaru WRX STI |
|
|
|
The rally-inspired DNA of the all new Subaru WRX STI is evident in every characteristic. Honed, following years in the fierce heat of the FIA WRC, it celebrates a glorious motorsport heritage.
From the distinctive lines that flow from the extended front fender to the rear, there is no mistaking the WRX STI's rally-bred credentials. At the same time, the dramatic aerodynamic performance, aggressive stance and muscular profile give drivers the promise of true driving stimulation.
The WRX STI carries its bold personality inside, where new Alcantara seat surfaces accented by red and black leather bolsters and red stitching set the tone for the upgraded cabin.
All that's said and done, the WRX STI sports a sweet balance between being a practical hauler and a sporty driver. There's certainly a sense of airiness in the cabin and there's ample space for a 1.8-metre tall passenger in front and the 2,650mm wheelbase translates to sufficient legroom for rear occupants. |
|
Powered by the legendary 2.5-litre turbocharged Boxer engine producing 296bhp and 407Nm of torque, the STI will zoom off the line to 100km/h in 5.2 seconds with some serious competence. Part credit goes to the specially reinforced six-speed manual transmission with its gunshot throws and smooth, silky slots.
The driving gurus at Subaru have also decided to increase the car's torsional rigidity and stability by swopping more rigid pillow ball bushings, an increased spring rate as well as stiffer front and rear stabiliser bars. As if those aren't enough, the WRX STI's chassis has been made 40 percent stiffer too.
In all honesty, the WRX STI doesn't make you feel drained, having to constantly door-handle the car like a madman. Although we reckon this is one car that prefers to be driven hard, it is easy to live with on a daily basis too. |
