Baey Yam Keng, MP for the Tampines GRC, has called for more training to be provided to drivers of heavy vehicles. He explains that since heavy vehicles are harder to control in the event of an emergency and have wider blind spots, more training for drivers of commercial vehicles to control these vehicles might be necessary - in a bid to reduce road fatalities.
MP Lim Wee Kiak from Nee Soon GRC shared similar sentiments to Baey Yam Keng, and hoped for authorities to study the wave of accidents involving heavy vehicles, and eventually prevent them, to help improve road conditions. He also suggested stringent penalties for traffic rule violators on roads where accidents and speeding are common.
The comments from the MPs came in after another heavy vehicle-related accident that took place at Tuas Crescent towards Tuas West Drive on Monday - the ninth fatal accident within a span of three months. The motorcyclist, identified as 73-year old Buman Abdullah, was a delivery driver and was pronounced dead at scene by paramedics after suffering head injuries.
Details on the accident are still unclear at the moment, but police investigations are ongoing.
The victim's son-in-law revealed Abdullah has been riding a motorcycle for more than a decade with no involvement in any major accident.
