LTA announces tender for five new peak period feeder bus services

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) called for tender yesterday, inviting private bus operators to bid for five peak period short services in Chua Chu Kang, Pasir Ris and Tampines.
The additional feeder services will complement current bus routes 291 and 293 in Tampines, 358 and 359 in Pasir Ris and 307 in Choa Chu Kang, during the morning and evening peak hours - from 6:30am to 8:30am, and 5:30pm to 7:30pm - on weekdays. Buses from the private operators will ply the most crowded stretches, in a bid to easen crowding and reduce waiting time during peak hours.
According to The Straits Times, the LTA announced in a statement that the move will "alleviate crowding, reduce waiting times and improve reliability during peak hours, by adding at least five more bus trips per hour".
Roger Wong, General Manager of Woodlands Transport told the English daily, his firm will study the tender before deciding whether to submit a bid - citing concerns of adequate fleet numbers to meet requirements.
Back in October, LTA called a tender for five short services in areas such as Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Boon Lay, Marsiling and Woodlands where, eight operators, including Tong Tar Transport Service, Woodlands Transport and ComfortDelGro Bus, submitted their interest. However the LTA has yet to announce the successful bidder.
The shuttle service is part of the $1.1 billion Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP) launched in September last year. Since the commencement of the programme, 111 services have been enhanced and 16 routes have been added.
Alternate bus services include the City Direct service, which ferries commuters from the heartlands to the city using expressways. In June, ComfortDelGro Bus was awarded a $1.06 million contract to run the first City Direct route from Jurong West while LTA issued contracts for another six such services last month.
The ongoing BSEP ends in 2016. However, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong hinted last Saturday about plans that runs beyond that.
