HMGICS supports SUTD's electric dreams

From Seoul University in Korea to Georgia Tech in the U.S.A and Oxford University in the U.K., Hyundai has been working hard to expand its network with universities and educational institutions across the globe.
And locally, the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre Singapore has also collaborated with Lasalle on an Ioniq 6 art car and donated an Ioniq 5 to the Singapore Institute of Technology.
But it seems like there's still room for more collaboration still: The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) has also received one example of the all-electric SUV. Offered at a handover ceremony on 9 October 2025, the day saw Dr Park Hyun Sung, CEO of the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre Singapore, delivering the car to Professor Phoon Kok Kwang, President of SUTD.
Offered as part of the innovation centre's corporate social responsibility programme, the Ioniq 5 (alongside a host of supporting components) is set to support educational and research initiatives at the school.
And there are significant initiatives planned. This donated car is not only set to offer students at the school a unique opportunity to engage with production-level EV technology, but will also support the next phase of the school's Project EVAM - an initiative to design and build a full-sized electric sports car from scratch.
SUTD's Project EVAM has already seen students working on a host of electric vehicle projects including P50-inspired vehicle and one inspired by the world of Formula One
Launched in 2020, Project EVAM has already seen the school building a Formula One-inspired vehicle, but this new phase of the project will see students receiving hands-on experience with a platform more representative of real-world electric vehicles.
The project first began with 15 undergraduates across SUTD programmes who were guided by faculty advisors and industry sponsors, and has since grown to involve around 50 students.
The donated car is also set to support the school's first automotive capstone project, which will see students from diverse fields collaborating on projects including the development of lightweight, efficient propulsion systems for urban traffic. Also in the works are projects including the development of bio-based and recycled materials as well as adaptive lighting and dynamic climate control systems that respond to cabin conditions.
So, don't be surprised if some clever innovations in your next Hyundai turn out to be first experimented and developed, right here in Singapore.
