A total of nine people were allegedly involved in a scam to cheat insurers of almost $25,000 by staging a fake accident. Rudyanto Sarmani and Sallahudin Ehram - pleaded guilty to providing two vehicles in the four-vehicle pseudo accident, while Kamis Bakar and Afghani Eusope admitted to posing as injured passengers - although they were not present at scene.
The masterminds of the fake accident were Mohammad Eunos Zakaria, who has not stood trial, and Mohamad Nassir Tohar - who died in Malaysia back in 2012. Various people were recruited to be 'phantom drivers' to lodge a false report that they were involved in the accident along Sembawang Drive on the 27th of July 2009, and to pose as passengers to make fraudulent insurance claims for injuries.
Rudyanto, who was paid $800 in the scam, brought a Toyota van belonging to his employer - Rentokil Initial Singapore - to the scene at about 11:00pm. There, he saw Mohammad Eunos with three damaged cars - a Proton Gen 2, a Hyundai Matrix and a Honda Fit - parked in tandem to each other.
An unknown male took over the van and rear ended into the third vehicle. Rudyanto also cheated Rentokil of $1,563 to cover repairs for the van - and has since paid back half of the repair cost.
For his actions, Rudyanto was sentenced to a two-month jail term yesterday while Sallahudin was sentenced to a four-month term for allowing his Proton be used in the scam, along with cheating NTUC Income of $4,500 as settlement for repairs to his car.
In addition he was also charged with cheating Tokio Marine Insurance Singapore of $3,550 on personal injury claims. A third charge of trying to fraud Tokio Marine on personal injury claims for his wife - who was not present at the scene - was also taken into consideration.
Kamis and Afghani were slapped with a jail term of three-months and six-weeks respectively. Afghani, had fully compensated close to $5,000 to the insurers involved and thus received the lightest sentence.
The hearing of the other five involved will be heard next month.
