Volkswagen is set to add a range-topping new premium model to its flagship Touareg line: The Touareg R.
The hybrid drive of the Touareg R consists of a 335bhp 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine paired with a 134bhp electric drive motor and a 14.1kWh lithium-ion battery built into the underbody of the luggage compartment.
The two drive systems can then be combined in a boost function which will see a full system power of 456bhp, while maximum system torque is 700Nm.
An eight-speed automatic gearbox (with Tiptronic) and a transfer box will transmit power to the front and rear axles via Volkswagen's 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive.
The car comes with a centre differential lock with asymmetric dynamic torque distribution, which distributes torque between the front and rear axle. A maximum of 70% of the drive force can be sent to the front axle and up to 80% can be sent to the rear axle.
The Touareg R will always start in the all electric E-MODE for zero emissions driving. The battery capacity is designed so that the Touareg R can cover the average daily commute under electric power.
Drivers however, can still intuitively control the battery's charge level using the Hybrid menu in the infotainment system. It will be possible to reserve sufficient levels of electric energy even at the end of a long journey so that destinations in built-up areas can be reached with zero emissions.
If the navigation system is active, the battery manager will look ahead and predictively take into account route and topography data to the adapt battery use and thus optimise the electric range.
The Black Style exterior design package and R-Line specification package will come as standard for the Touareg R.
The Black Style exterior package brings to the car R-style body colour bumpers and lower door sections, while the air intake grilles, trim strips on the side windows and exterior mirror housings are finished in black.
A black trim strip on the lower part of the front bumper will be exclusive to the Touareg R. The car will also come with 'R' logos in the radiator grille, on the boot lid and on the signets on the front wings and doors as well as darkened LED taillight clusters.
20-inch Braga alloy wheels are available with black on the inside and burnished on the outside, or in matt grey on the inside and burnished on the outside. Body colour wheel housing extensions and trapezoidal tailpipes come as standard.
The R-Line specification interior package meanwhile adds decorative trim on the dash panel and door inserts in Silver Wave aluminium, while the centre console is finished in High Gloss Black and Silver Look.
The package also adds Vienna leather for the comfort seats with a leather 'R' logo in the head restraints, as well as stainless steel load sill protection, a new leather multi-function steering wheel, illuminated stainless steel door sill panel trim, brushed stainless steel pedals and white background lighting.
The stitching on the leather seats is finished in Crystal Grey, as are the edging strips on the textile floor mats and the decorative seams on the armrests, selector lever and door trim.
The Touareg R will also be the first Volkswagen to boast Volkswagen's latest version of Travel Assist, allowing assisted driving up to a speed of 250km/h.
