Mazda 2 Hatchback Price: $173,888 | Distributor: Trans Eurokars (Mazda) |
|
|
The Mazda2 is a diminutive little hatchback that comes packed full of features, wrapped in an attractive skin, and the whole is very much greater than the sum of its parts.
In line with Mazda's 'KODO: Soul of Motion' design philosophy, the Mazda2 shares the same design elements with its larger siblings, with sharper lines and chrome trimmings creating an aggressive, sculpted look. We are particularly attracted by the aggressive front fascia and swooping roofline.
The interior veers towards the side of simplicity, but there is an obvious quality about it. Mazda has paid a lot of attention to detail, with a tastefully finished interior that reflects quality craftsmanship. The Mazda2 is also very well equipped, such as the MZD Connect multimedia system inherited from the Mazda3.
Powering the Mazda2 is a 1.5-litre SkyActiv engine, and it is a perky little powerplant. It is much more refined and quieter than its predecessor, while being great fun especially at higher revs. Despite being quite rev-happy and packing plenty of punch, the engine is surprisingly light on fuel. The new six-speed transmission is also a noticeable upgrade, offering smooth shifts that pairs well with the eager powerplant. |
|
The new Mazda2 also feels more comfortable and pliant on the road, smoothing over bumps in the road nicely. With its good chassis rigidity and well-weighted and sharp steering, the hatchback feels sporty on the road. The handling has a sparkle not common to cars of its ilk.
What sets the Mazda2 apart in its category is the combination of head-turning looks, a refined cabin with significantly raised style and quality, and a comfortable yet fun driving experience. In many ways, the Mazda2 feels like it deserves to belong in a larger-sized category, packing a ton of features and effortless drivability into a compact package. It almost feels little too good to sit in the compact hatchback category, and that makes it a clear winner. |

Mazda 3 Hatchback Price: POA | Distributor: Trans Eurokars (Mazda) |
|
|
The current generation Mazda3 is engineered completely in-house and this has allowed the Mazda engineers to work free of external constraints, thus creating one of the best-looking cars of its segment and certainly one of the best to drive as well.
Given its looks and excellent driving dynamics, the Mazda3 Hatchback is proof that economical, fuel-efficient cars need not be dull to look at or to drive. Its long hood and 'cab-back' design has its much more understated-looking rivals beaten in the styling department.
On the inside, the cabin boasts solid materials with excellent fit and finish that garners a more upmarket feeling. The result of which - is a modern interior that has more features including a new optional head-up display. Just like its exterior, the interior of the Mazda3 Hatchback is easily one of the most stylish in its segment. |
|
The best part about the car however, lies in the way it drives. The 1.5-litre SkyActiv-G engine under the hood is a peppy one that pulls well from low revs and gathers pace with just enough enthusiasm to pass muster for everyday driving. Paired with the six-speed automatic that provides brisk gear changes, the Mazda3 Hatchback is composed and comfortable.
But the aspect where it really shines is its handling. Thanks to a sturdy chassis, you can chuck this car around and it remains stable and grippy - making it really easy to have fun in this car. With the ability to charm with its spanking good looks, a very sophisticated interior and sublime handling, the Mazda3 Hatchback proves itself worthy of being a segment leader. |

BMW M135i Price: $208,800 - $241,800 | Distributor: Performance Motors |
|
|
With added kit and 6bhp boost in power, the BMW M135i has its aggression levels turned up a couple of notches. The M135i now sports a more chiselled appearance, thanks to sleeker headlamps, sharper kidney grille and more sculpted taillights. Fog lamps have also been replaced by large air intakes to assist in aerodynamics and cooling efficiency purposes - a testament to the performance prerogatives that define the M.
Added touches like the M135's brazen twin tailpipes and stronger-looking M light-alloy 18-inch wheels aid in the hot hatch's combative form.
The car's air of sportiness is mirrored in its cabin - highlighted by bucket seats that are beautifully wrapped in alcantara and leather, finished with sporty blue stitches that match the credentials of the car itself. |
|
Although the new M135i feels much the same to drive as its predecessor - that's not a bad thing at all. Packed with a healthy dose of 326bhp and 450Nm of torque, its happy-to-rev 3.0-litre in-line six motor feels enormously eager in almost any gear, at almost any speed. It completes the century sprint in a rapid 4.9 seconds and even with that amount of muscle and aggression, power delivery is linear.
Like the rest of the cars from BMW's stable, the M135i scores high on its ride and handling fronts. It's got astounding levels of grip with all the traction and stability systems switched on, and more than enough power to light up the rear wheels when you flick everything off.
The BMW M135i is a hot hatch in every sense of the term and provides the right amounts of fun that make it a hot-hatch favourite. |

Jaguar XE Price: POA | Distributor: Wearnes Automotive |
|
|
Despite being the new kid on the block, the Jaguar XE has managed to charm its way to the top of the segment. The success of the XE is down to a mix of stunning looks with cues taken from the F-Type sports car and the feeling of high-end luxury thanks to its sumptuous leather-clad interior. These all add up to a package that's appealing to buyers from all ages and all walks of life.
This compact executive sedan sports slim yet sinister-looking headlamps that sit nicely at the front of the sleek bonnet and simple yet sharp creases on the bonnet that drag past the A-pillar all the way to the C-pillar, making it an unpretentious design that's easy on the eye.
Just like its simple and uncluttered sheet metal, the cockpit of the XE bears a modern yet sophisticated design that is classier that its rivals. It boasts attention to details such as the rotary gear selector, which rises out of the centre console the moment you fire up the car and a multi-media display that has an intuitive touchscreen interface. |
|
Dominated by a 2.0-litre four-pot powerplant - the lump under the XE's bonnet dishes out 197bhp and 280Nm of twisting force to the rear wheels. Power is delivered in a linear yet persistent manner - a demeanour that most turbocharged cars fail to behave in.
With the its aluminium suspension, with double wishbones at the front and a beautifully engineered multi-link set-up at the rear, the XE handles superbly and enthusiastically through a series of bends - all while managing to remain calm and composed. Few compact executive sedans are as fun and dynamically sound as this. |

Toyota Corolla Altis Price: POA | Distributor: Borneo Motors |
|
|
Now in its 11th generation, the Toyota Altis is a sedan that needs no introduction. While it has undergone a series of design changes for the past 10 generations, it's only with this latest iteration that Toyota can proudly claim it to be a revolution.
Although the Altis is no longer as instantly recognisable as it used to be, it is easily one of the sleekest in its class. It has proudly shed its boring family image that will see it attracting the younger and trendier audience.
Quality of the Altis' interior build and quality have also been tweaked to give the interior a classier and more comfortable finish while balancing modernity and comfort. Other than the fact that the Altis has higher quality leather and plastics, the instrument panel is also prettier and more futuristic now, thanks to a radiant blue illumination. |
|
Along with sufficient headroom for occupants, buyers will also appreciate its increase in wheelbase length and the flat floor bed in the middle rear seat - translating into a more generous legroom for rear passengers.
Just as before, claiming that the Altis is a very comfortable car to pilot would be an understatement. At speed, the car delivers poise and precision unfailingly, which is a pleasant surprise. With 121bhp and 154Nm of torque from its 1.6-litre engine paired to a new Super Continuously Variable Transmission with intelligence (CVT-i) - the Altis manages to serve up a decent ride - with the cosseting serenity little cars have in this segment. |

Mitsubishi Attrage Price: POA | Distributor: Cycle & Carriage Mitsubishi |
|
|
The latest offering in the compact sedan segment, the Mitsubishi Attrage was born as a result of the current trend of engine downsizing and the focus on developing fuel efficient cars.
Mitsubishi's designers have successfully eliminated that particular hatchback-to-sedan stigma with a nice profile that flows nicely from along the Attrage. It bears a mature and sophisticated visage with its larger chrome radiator grille along with air inlets to provide cooling for the engine and fog lamps that have a C-shaped chrome accent on each corner on the front bumper.
Despite the Attrage's compact dimensions, it feels surprisingly spacious inside - with enough space in the back for three Asian adults with good leg and headroom. Mitsubishi has created in the Attrage - a cabin that feels well-built and surprisingly upmarket in appearance along with storage spaces for small items in the centre console and large door bins. |
|
On the road, the Attrage's 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine and seamless CVT transmission continues to impress. Despite its small power figures, the modest 74bhp and 100Nm of torque is sufficient to get the 905kg Attrage along at a respectable pace, about our city streets.
A low weight and a small drivetrain also translate to the fact that this is a fuel efficient car and it didn't disappoint with its 13.5km/L fuel efficiency.
The Attrage really stands out as a no frills city car - as it does not attempt at promising to be anything other than offer convenient personal transport. As affordable and comfortable city runabouts go, this car is an excellent choice. |

Lexus ES 250 Price: POA | Distributor: Borneo Motors |
|
|
The ES is the sixth generation version of the mid-sized luxury sedan that has proved to be the Japanese carmaker's best-selling product both locally and globally for a number of years for being a leisurely cruiser that is big on opulence and interior space.
Although the ES may slot in just below the IS range but spatially it offers accommodation closer to that of the GS - think of it as the spacious and comfortable alternative to the more dynamically focused IS and GS ranges. For the sixth instalment, it now wears a sharp and bold face carried by younger members of Lexus' lineup and the car's aggressively styled sheet metal bears a distinct road presence that is easily recognisable wherever it goes.
On the inside, Shimamoku wood trims line the lush and luxurious cabin that sports high quality materials, supple leather and excellent fit and finish. With the ES, expressing that the cabin is comfortable is simply stating the obvious. No matter which seat you occupy in the ES - it will always be a genuinely pleasant experience. |
|
Lexus' excellent pairing of the 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine that makes 180bhp and 235Nm of torque and a six-speed ECT automatic transmission allows the ES250 to get up to speed in a refined and cultured manner - allowing you to cultivate a driving style skewed towards grace rather than pace. And despite the car's exceptionally pliant ride, it doesn't lean around corners to the extent that one might expect - in fact, it feels decidedly surefooted.
When it comes to luxury sedans like the ES, it is ridiculous refinement and the attention to details that counts and the ES easily proves itself as a leader in a class. |

Mazda 6 Sedan Price: POA | Distributor: Trans Eurokars (Mazda) |
|
|
When the Mazda6 was first unveiled at the 2012 Moscow Motor Show, it became one of the best-looking Mazdas ever made and it wasn't a surprise it drove showroom traffic and sales up because of that. And with its latest update, the Japanese carmaker further aims to keep the family sedan ahead of the pack.
One look at the Mazda6 is enough to fire up your emotions and heighten the anticipation of excitement to come. Particular effort was dedicated during this update to further enhance the car's award-winning design and to create a deeper, stronger design expression.
While the sophisticated style of 'KODO: Soul Of Motion' remains, the refreshed Mazda6 marks an evolution to a bolder and more elegant expression that lends it stronger presence as the flagship model and clearly conveys the further evolution of the brand.
Every detail related to texture and quality inside the car was polished to perfection, further lifting the level of quality. To meet this goal, Mazda's designers boldly evolved the shapes of the instrument panel and centre console, while paying careful attention to the shapes, expressions and use of colours for the parts and ornamentation laid out in these areas. |
|
The update also includes the adoption of Mazda Connect, Mazda's next generation car connectivity system and a new Electrical Parking Brake (EPB). As such, both convenience and comfort has been enhanced, while also heightening a sense of high-quality as befits the flagship model.
Powertrain configurations include Mazda's 2.0-litre or 2.5-litre SkyActiv engines that come mated with a six-speed automatic transmission. For this facelift, particular effort was devoted to adding greater enjoyment of the driving experience by further enhancing the level of all-round comfort, including ride comfort and quietness.
The improvement that Mazda has made to its family sedan has stepped up the levels of luxury and refinement to another level, making the car almost appear like a packed European sedan for much less.
As a result, it isn't hard to see where the Mazda6 is headed for generations to come. |

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Price: $406,888 - $608,888 | Distributor: Cycle & Carriage Industries |
|
|
The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class simply cannot be overlooked. Even when at a standstill, the car gives the impression that it is about to burst into a sprint at any second.
Its exterior design is a union of stylish poise with sporty elegance. The highly-charged feature line, the three-dimensional radiator grille and the innovative headlamps and tail lamps employing cutting-edge LED technology are all characteristics of the high-tech nature of the S-Class and help to underline its position as one of the world's leading saloons visually as well.
It's clear that Mercedes-Benz took the threat in the flagship segment seriously, considering the S-Class has been designed in such a way that will force brands like Audi, BMW and Jaguar back to their drawing boards.
100 years or so after the introduction of electric lighting in motor vehicles, Mercedes-Benz made a complete switch to LED technology and the new S-Class is the first vehicle in the world to do without a single light bulb, and this also sees Mercedes-Benz building on its pioneering role in the lighting sector. |
|
Perfection to the last detail is particularly noticeable in the interior: whether it is the seats or the air-conditioning, the controls or the design, the infotainment or the comfort and safety in the rear. The essence of the atmosphere in the generously-sized cabin is all about feeling good, relaxing and being able to concentrate on work if required.
With a range of petrol, diesel and petrol-hybrid variants to choose from, one will be spoiled for choice when it comes to a drivetrain decision. Having tested the petrol-hybrid S400L and the S350L BlueTEC, it is safe to say that both complement the S-Class's refinement.
With Mercedes-Benz imparting all its know-how into the S-Class, we are not surprised it is head and shoulders above the rest of its class. |

Volkswagen Passat Price: POA | Distributor: Volkswagen Group Singapore |
|
|
For over four decades, Volkswagen has been perfecting the Passat. With the debut of the new B8 Passat, Volkswagen is revealing a design that combines stylish clarity with a high level of impressive power.
On the outside, the new car is a picture of sporting elegance and radiates an extraordinary sense of dynamism and poise that sets it apart from its predecessors as well as its competitors.
Based on a stretched variant of the modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform, it was possible to further improve interior space as well. Although the latest Passat is shorter than the previous model, a longer wheelbase means head and legroom has increased, which is obviously better felt in the rear where three Asian adults will fit in comfortably.
Corresponding to the elaborately designed exterior, the designers developed a cabin whose aesthetics, clarity and high-value are a match for the sophisticated overall concept of the eighth generation Passat. |
|
Many will be familiar with the 1.8-litre TSI engine as seen in other VW products, but it is now a relatively sweeter unit that delivers its torque in a much more linear fashion than the previous motor.
And with a new platform, a longer wheelbase, lower centre of gravity and better torsional rigidity, the Volkswagen's premium family sedan is more dynamic than ever before.
Those encountering the new Passat for the first time will notice that the car is not a typical mid-sized car, and that it is also an appropriate one in the upper mid-sized category or premium segment.
What this means is that the car is moving further away from the likes of the Ford Mondeo, the Opel Insignia and the Peugeot 508, getting closer to offerings such as the Audi A4, the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. |

Nissan Qashqai Price: POA | Distributor: Tan Chong Motor Sales |
|
|
The Nissan Qashqai sets a new benchmark for SUV design. New from the ground up, the SUV is much more than just a rework of its groundbreaking predecessor.
Featuring a striking new look with powerful curves, clean lines and intricate details, it is longer than its predecessor and fractionally lower and wider, giving it a sleek, poised stance while maintaining the SUV style, compact dimensions and raised driving position.Through bold new elements such as the raised bonnet line and muscular wheelarches, the new Qashqai conveys a feeling of dynamic strength.
Inside, a dramatic rise in material and design quality adds significant interior appeal to the Qashqai package. Comfort, connectivity and control are three of the core elements that underpin the design and layout of the new Qashqai's cabin.

Performance demands aside, the Qashqai drives effortlessly, and handles more like a hatchback than an SUV. The ride quality is surprisingly impressive, as it soaks up imperfections on the road, large humps included, with ease.

Mitsubishi Outlander Price: POA | Distributor: Cycle & Carriage Mitsubishi |
|
|
Much more than a traditional mid-cycle refresh that consists of minor aesthetic updates, the Mitsubishi Outlander has been redesigned and re-engineered to stand out in the competitive large SUV segment.
Mitsubishi's new design concept - Dynamic Shield - makes its debut here and it definitely does a big part in making this model look more cohesive and attractive than before.
Other elements that blend the Outlander's masculinity with the urban environment it's intended for include 18-inch alloys, silver roof rails, silver skid plates, black wheel arches and LED combination tail lamps.
On the inside, the Outlander retains its time-tested formula of a comfortable albeit simple cabin but it gains a new wood-like trim, new stitchwork on seats, improved headlining as well as a brand new steering wheel.
Once you get settled, the Outlander's cabin feels more like that of a luxury sedan than an SUV. It accomodates seven pax and there is good headroom and legroom for three Asian adults in the second row, while the third row can be utilised as a backup plan for carpool duty or for the younger ones. |
|
The large SUV boasts improved handling and greatly reduced noise, vibration and harshness, along with increased body and structural rigidity, for a quieter and superbly composed ride. At cruising speeds, the car cocoons like a sleep pod, insulating so well against road noise and tyre roar, one won't even notice the speed.
At the heart of the Outlander is Mitsubishi's 2.4-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder MIVEC engine that's paired to an upgraded INVECS-III CVT gearbox. Contrary to what 165bhp and 222Nm of torque may suggest, the new Outlander offers a sprightly drive, with smooth and refined power delivery.
Under the Outlander's updated sheet metal, several engineering improvements contribute to a better overall sense of refinement and makes the SUV a genuine all-rounder and the winner of the large SUV category. |

Volvo XC90 Price: $293,000 - $373,000 | Distributor: Wearnes Automotive |
|
|
The all new Volvo XC90 marks the beginning of a new chapter in Volvo's history, capturing its future design direction, incorporating its own range of new technologies and utilising the Swedish carmaker's new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA).
It is also the first Volvo to carry the company's new more prominent iron mark, which has the iconic arrow elegantly aligned with the diagonal slash across the grille. Together with the T-shaped "Thor's Hammer" daytime running lights, the iron mark introduces an entirely new, distinctive and confident face for Volvo's forthcoming generation of cars.
Inside the seven-seater SUV, it is very much the same story. The cabin is the most luxurious to have been designed for a Volvo and combines materials such as finest Nappa leather and wood with handcrafted details, including a gear lever made of crystal glass from Orrefors, the famous Swedish glassmaker, as well as diamond-cut controls for the start/stop button and volume control.
Volvo already enjoys a reputation for providing the most comfortable seats in the industry. The new XC90 enhances this reputation by offering innovatively designed seats that also free up interior space for passengers both in the second and third seat rows, helping to make the new XC90 a genuine seven-seater. |
|
Under the hood, the XC90 gets the company's new four-cylinder T6 engine that is both supercharged and turbocharged, making 320bhp and 400Nm of torque. The XC90 range also includes the D5 twin-turbo diesel engine with 225bhp and 470Nm of torque, with best in class fuel consumption of 17.2km/L.
The new XC90 isn't the most powerful car in its segment, nor is it the most engaging to drive, but the fantastic interior with its delicious blend of materials and family centric space and comfort show that Volvo's focus is still where it always was - on the occupants of its cars.
In short, we walked away really impressed and that is why the XC90 is our Premium SUV of the year. |

|
|
The Kia Carens very much symbolises the brand's recent renaissance, offering a well-built, practical and nicely styled family car complete with all the amenities we have come to expect from a seven-seater MPV.
Benefitting from Kia's design-led transformation, the Carens is a stylish and handsome car, highlighted by the signature 'Tiger Nose' front grille. The feature line running from front to back helps to stretch the car's profile and give it a sleeker overall silhouette.
The interior of the Carens is somewhat more conservative, geared towards great functionality and versatility. With the rear seats folded down, the car affords 492 litres of boot space, perfect for its role as a people-mover. Underfloor compartments and several useful storage compartments accentuate the cars functionality. |

Honda Odyssey Price: POA | Distributor: Kah Motor |
|
|
Honda's latest family MPV has grown in all dimensions, particularly in height with an additional 150mm added to the new car. This overhaul grants the new Odyssey a bigger and more spacious cabin, which can fit up to eight people in comfort.
The sleek and streamlined sheet metal of the Honda Odyssey does an excellent job of disguising it's obvious heft, with a deep bumper bar along the side profile that appears to hug to the ground.
Available in two trims, an eight-seater and a more luxurious seven-seater, the Odyssey's key selling point is its luxurious, comfortable and serene cabin. The 2-2-3 seating arrangement in the luxury variant comes with a centre row featuring ottoman seats, offering unparalleled comfort in its segment. The second row can also now slide sideways, creating an unimpeded central walkway to the rear row. |

Honda has equipped the new car with the new Earth Dreams CVT transmission, granting seamless gearshifts and offering greater fuel efficiency than its predecessor. Mated to a 2.4-litre engine that delivers 174bhp and 225Nm of torque, the Odyssey feel relatively punchy on the move. And for a car that weigh's over 1.8 tonnes, we managed 9.4km/l on the go, which is commendable for a car its size.

BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Price: POA | Distributor: Eurokars Auto |
|
|
BMW's first front-wheel drive model, and its first foray into the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) sector, the 2 Series Active Tourer proves to be a convention defying car, offering incredible dynamism and functionality that make it stand out in its class.
Like most MPVs, the Bimmer isn't the most stylistically appealing or good-looking, but the sharp head lights and beefy rear end bear a resemblance to models like the X3. The Active Tourer's relatively compact dimensions means that it is easy to manoeuvre in tight space.
Pegged as an 'entry-level' model, the level of quality and equipment in the interior will surprise many. The cabin is well-appointed, with soft-touch materials liberally applied together with some fine wood finishes. LED ambient lights add cosy touch to the roomy cabin. The interior is also very spacious, fitting five adults comfortably. In addition, the automatic tailgate makes access to the generous boot space very convenient. |
|
Where the Active Tourer really manages to stand out in its segment is in the drive. The 1.5-litre turbocharged engine is very enthusiastic, eager to rev and behave rather unlike the way it should. Comfortable over long distances, the responsive steering lets you corner neatly, albeit with the inevitable bit of body roll. With a lot of discipline to tame the sprightly engine, the fuel consumption reaches very commendable levels of 19km/L.
The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is a well-refined package that offers everything a family will need in an MPV. It is spacious, comfortable and comes packed full with practical features. What truly sets it apart is that it manages to defy the conventional image of MPVs as being 'boring', and sets a high benchmark for future models to come |

Lexus RC F Price: POA | Distributor: Borneo Motors |
|
|
Despite being fairly new to the segment, the Lexus RC F is an aggressive, muscular and exciting premium performance coupe that holds its own in a segment typically dominated by the Germans.
One of the most striking aspects of the RC F is its antagonising good looks, with a larger-than-life grille, bulged bonnet, flared fenders and gigantic air intakes. The RC F is a sight to behold on the roads, no matter which angle you are looking at it from. Despite its flashy and monstrous appearance, the flowing lines provide the car with a cohesive appearance.
The interior of the RC F is swathed in typical Lexus richness, which is somewhat surprising considering the 'hardcore' nature of cars of its ilk. Everything is expensive to the touch, offering plush and luxurious comfort. Occasional carbon fire touches, blue stitching on the steering wheel and sports dials on the instrument cluster (with the car in Sport mode) hint at sports car that lies within. |
|
The heart of the RC F is a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine, with 470bhp and 530Nm of torque that will surely make your sense tingle. With the much improved gearbox, the car is is hair-raisingly aggressive when you want it to be, with a ear-watering noise that gets better the harder you push it. But what perhaps sets it apart from the field is its ability to tone down to offer incredible civility. The suspension offers a really comfortable ride, perfect for the daily commute.
It is the Jekyll and Hyde character of the RC F that set it apart. It is supple, comfortable and luxurious enough to be a perfect car for daily use, and on our permanently crowded roads, there is little place for harsh suspension and bare interiors. But when the roads clear up and you decide to stretch the car's legs a little, it will roar and excite you to no end. |

Honda HR-V Price: $102,999 - $132,999 | Distributor: Kah Motor |
|
|
The Honda HR-V wraps a ton of practicality, functionality and space with a sleek, coupe-like skin that is modern and expressive, unlike many of the new crossover SUVs of late. And its easy to see what it has been such a popular car with Singapore drivers, with the cool exterior hiding its economical and practical nature.
Named the Hip Runabout Vehicle by Honda, it definitely lives up to the 'hip' moniker. The groovy coupe-like frame, with its curved windows arches and sloping roof line, makes for a sport looking vehicle that is easy on the eyes. The cleverly hidden rear door handles is a cool touch, and emblematic of the car's ability to deceive.
The interior does an incredible trick of expanding in size, a lot larger than it appears from the outside. There is lots of room all around, and the interior offers a simple but upmarket look, with soft touch material and piano black trim accentuating the quality and attention to detail. The HR-V's Foldable 60:40 ULTRA rear seats allow the boot to be expanded to a generous 1,533 litres, which makes the car incredibly versatile. |
|
The drive is notably geared towards comfort and fuel efficiency. The engine and gearbox do not make for the most spirited of driving, but it does return impressive fuel consumption numbers for a naturally aspirated crossover. A coloured ring around the speedometer glows green when the car is driven economically, and that's probably the best way to be driving it. The surprisingly direct steering and firmer suspension allows for good road handling and confidence.
Ultimately, what makes the Honda HR-V stand out is the deceiving way it manages to hide lots of family-practicality, economy and traditional SUV elements in a good looking, compact shell. It mixes angles and curves in an attractive design that lends it a sporty look while hiding its budget-friendly roots. No wonder the HR-V is everywhere you look these days. |

The second generation X1 is a big departure from its predecessor, with a wholly redesigned platform. The car has some dashing good looks, its aggressive, tougher looking facade reminiscent of its bigger brothers. Shorter and taller than before, the X1 also cuts an intimidating figure on the road.
The cabin offers a hearty amount of quality and practicality. Its front-wheel drive platform means that extra space has been carved out for the occupants and boot, with a generous 505 litres of boot storage. A result of the X1's extra height is the elevated seating position, offering excellent driving visibility. Fit and finish in the interior is also excellent, and there are lots of nifty storage compartments to stow away your possessions. |
|
The 2.0-litre twin-turbo engine is a chirpy little powerplant, and paired with a smooth eight-speed transmission, makes for an impressive drive. Perhaps what is most impressive about the X1 is the way it belies its obvious size and height, managing to stay extremely planted going briskly through corners, adding an element of fun to what is normally perceived to be a purely practical sort of vehicle.
In a burgeoning market of crossover vehicles, carmakers are increasingly trying to pack more and more amenities and safety features into compact architectures, often to the detriment of the car's driving dynamics. That said, it's nice to know that the Bavarians haven't forgotten to imbue its X1 with an abundance of character, drivability and practicality, and that's what makes it top of its class. |

Competing against the Lexus LS600h Hybrid and the BMW ActiveHybrid 7, the new S-Class Hybrid is Mercedes-Benz's largest and grandest hybrid model in its range. Serving as the flagship model for Mercedes the S-Class has debuted many of the company's latest innovations, including drivetrain technologies, comfort upgrades as well as safety systems. And for the latest S-Class, it's no different.
Looking more balanced and hunkered in a way its predecessor never accomplished before, the design team have brought the S-Class to a new realm of possibility.
Technological highlights include the headlamps; for starters, have over 110 LEDs while the taillights consist of some 70 LEDs (excluding rear fog lamps) on the outside. Inside, the car is filled with some 300 LEDs, including the strips of coloured ambient lighting that can glow in a choice of six cosy colours. Of course, like all S-Classes before, the car is bathed in an abundance of soft leather that pampers the occupants. Other than the lights and the classy ambience, they will also notice the two high-resolution 12.3-inch TFT colour displays on the dashboard. |
|
With a maximum output of 306 horses and 370Nm of torque, the S-Class is engineered in such a way that it can move from a standstill with spectacular smoothness and ferocious fervour without a slightest hint of switch between pure electric to gasoline. On the go, intrusiveness from the outside world is down to bare minimum even though it runs 19-inch wheels, thanks to the wonderfully calibrated. Coupled with an accurate steering wheel and good body control, Mercedes has endowed this car with both dynamism and comfort.
While everyone says that the S-Class is more enjoyable at the back, we reckon otherwise. With its ground-breaking technologies, it almost feels like the S-Class is looking out for your well-being in all directions. |

In our eyes, the CLA-Class Shooting Brake is one of Mercedes-Benz's finest work and offers more space for passengers and distinctly more real estate in the boot. On song with the trend in sleeker profiles in cars, the Shooting Brake marries the stylishness of a coupe with the utility of a stationwagon.
The CLA Shooting Brake is, without a doubt, a very pretty car. Right up to the A-pillars, the car shares the same dynamic avant garde styling as its four-door sibling, the CLA Coupe. This includes the trademark CLA diamond radiator grille, framed by muscular V-shaped 'power lines' on the bonnet, large air vents on the bumper and HID head lights framed by LED 'eyebrows'.
What makes the Shooting Brake stand out though, is its stylish long roof that rises from the A-pillars all the way to the rear before tapering down to meet the rear bumper. This results in a sleek muscular appearance that's very unique for a car in this segment. |
|
The Shooting Brake may also look bigger, but save for rear passengers getting 40mm of extra headroom because of the taller roof, the 4,630mm x 1,777mm x 1,435mm (L x W x H) dimensions do not differ from the Coupe's.
The exterior's progressive, sporty appearance is continued inside the vehicle. The layout of the centre console is neat with turbine-shaped air-conditioning vents and generous strips of brushed aluminium strips across the dash for that luxurious touch. The material is of a better quality, and there are the little accents that add a touch of class. Similarly, the little touches like badging, subtle features like ambient lights creates a sense of extravagance that sealed the deal for us. |

A clear sign of the popularity of the Audi A1 Sportback is the over 500,000 cars sold worldwide since its market launch in 2010. Freshly facelifted, the Audi compact model is now even more attractive, with benefits to both interior and exterior design.
Featuring the necessary tweaks on the grille, headlamps and taillights made to the A1 Sportback, its looks has been enhanced with the help of sleek LEDs used around the car to make it stand out at night. As such, the supermini hasn't lost the sense of style that has been associated with it since the predecessor was launched in Singapore back in 2012.
Inside, the cabin is a work of art, with an immaculate attention to details and a cosy ambience to lift even the most stressful of moods. Build quality is second to none in its class and it feels every bit a proper luxurious car. |
|
However, the biggest and best change in our opinion is the new delightful 1.0-litre three-pot powerplant that has the ability to pull the car of close to 1.1 tonnes across the 100km/h mark in a respectable 10.9 seconds. While the timing does not sound fantastically fast, the mighty low and mid-range from the 160Nm of torque and the car's inclination to outdo itself with its humble 95bhp is very commendable.
With the help of the smooth seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the car is at home no matter if you're potting around town or cruising at legal speeds on the expressway. High profile tyres with 15-inch wheels further enhance the ride quality despite the firm damping.
So if you are looking for one of the best superminis in town and don't want your bank account to dry up, the Audi A1 Sportback is a great choice. |

Honda Mobilio Price: $106,999 - $107,999 | Distributor: Kah Motor |

Honda Mobilio |
 |
|
|
First introduced in 2001, the Mobilio is Honda's seven-seater compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) and is the second model in Honda's Small Max series. Featuring a distinctive twin-slat chrome grille, chic front bumper, projector headlights with LED position lights and fog lights, the Mobilo avoids the boring family MPV look with ease.
The electric door mirrors with side indicators, streamlined side skirts, a sporty rear bumper, tailgate spoiler and classy 15-inch alloy wheels, complete its stylish, sporty impression.
Inside, Honda has left no stones unturned and has provided all the basic amenities that one expects in an MPV's cabin, wide door aperture for the second and third row passengers' convenience as well as roof-mounted air-conditioning vents to cool them in this hot and humid climate, among others. Other notable highlights inside include an easy one-touch mechanism to fold the second row seats and a load capacity if 521 litres. |
|
Sharing the same 1.5-litre engine as the City and the new HR-V, the powerplant is a gem in the way it revs freely and hauls the car along without feeling strained. The power from the modest motor is decent but it was the CVT's nifty response that made the car feel sprightlier than expected. The zero to hundred sprint from standstill takes 11.6 seconds, which is pretty decent for an MPV.
Thanks to Honda's Earth Dreams technology, the 118bhp engine returns a very decent 12.5km/L during our three-day test drive. Mind you, the car was driven pretty hard hence the inability to hit the manufacturer's claim of doing 16km/L. On the move, the Mobilio is quite pliant over most surfaces, although the suspension is a bit on the stiffer side
With all these plus points, it is not hard to see why the Honda Mobilio is the People's Pick in this year's competition. |

Honda HR-V |

|
|
Honda's latest compact Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), based on the Jazz, is one of the hottest contenders in its segment. It is not hard to see why as it blends the styling of a coupe, the toughness, space and utility of an SUV, as well as the quality and refinement of a typical Honda in one sporty and versatile vehicle.
Developed on Honda's Global Compact Series platform, the exterior design matches the HR-V's fun and sophisticated driving character. The aerodynamic front end features a prominent black grille that makes the car look wider than it is while the sloping frame with its curved window area and arching roof line give it a sense of speed even when parked. The hidden rear door handles smoothens the rear door lines for a coupe-like style.
Inside, the sophisticated interior features an expansive, airy cockpit with an abundance of soft-touch materials and premium detailing punctuated by precise bezels, lovely stitch lines and up-market brushed chrome and piano black highlights - all fitting its mission as a youthful yet refined personal crossover vehicle. |
|
As for the drive, the HR-V is equipped with a four-cylinder in-line SOHC i-VTEC mated to an Earth Dreams CVT gearbox that is designed to optimise good fuel economy. That said, the car is not in anyway sluggish. We achieved a very decent 15km/L during our time with the car. To encourage economical driving, The ring around the HR-V's speedometer glows green when you go easy on the throttle and blushes blue when you put your foot down to indicate that you are door-handling the car like a maniac.
If you're looking for a car that's looks sexy standing still, practical with good fuel economy and has a cabin comfortable enough for five adults, look no further - the HR-V is the do-it-all car. |

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Saloon Price: $177,888 - $452,888 | Distributor: Cycle & Carriage Industries |

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Saloon |
 |
|
|
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the biggest-selling model series from Mercedes-Benz. Sales of the preceding model, which was launched in 2007, total over 2.4 million and with the current model, we are not surprised the success of the C-Class will continue.
Unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show, the new C-Class is an enormous leap from its predecessor, with huge improvements across the board, a more appealing design and a step up in quality.
The new C-Class is also the first model to utilise Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) platform, which will go on to serve under the rest of Mercedes' larger rear-wheel driven models too.
For the latest generation, the C-Class has grown to become quite a big car. In fact, it is almost as big as an E-Class from two generations ago. With the extended dimensions, it also means more space for passengers, especially in terms of legroom, thanks to an 80mm longer wheelbase. Coupled with the plush leather seats that give good support, the journey in the new C-Class is a comfortable one. |
|
A 2.0-litre force-fed lump that is capable of 181bhp and 300Nm of torque now sits in the front and coupled with the smooth-shifting seven-speed transmission, the drivetrain offers a silky experience both around the city and when the going gets fun on the highway.
With five driving modes to choose from, drivers can also alter the way the car behaves.
As a package, the new C-Class is a tremendous contender in this ever-popular segment and the result that looks and feels every bit as good as a mini S-Class is something Mercedes-Benz should be proud of. |

Alfa Romeo 4C |

|
|
After years of making pretty but uninspiring hatchbacks, Alfa Romeo finally makes its return to the sports car scene with its new 4C. Promising extraordinary performance, unique handling and design, the new Alfa Romeo 4C is set to be a driving machine without any compromise.
At a length of approximately four metres and a wheelbase of less than 2.4 metres, the 4C is as compact as you want it. Accompanying the dynamic qualities of the car is its weight to power ratio of less than 4 kg/bhp, which is comparable to most supercars. This is achievable thanks to its featherweight 895 kg kerb weight.
Powering the car is its new four-cylinder 1750 Turbo Petrol with direct injection that pumps out 237bhp and 350Nm of torque. To illustrate how fast it is, the 4C is able to go from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds and onwards to a top speed of over 250km/h. |
|
Transferring the power to the road is the new Alfa TCT six-speed gearbox with dual dry clutch. Shift times are almost non-existent and shifting quality is top notch. The Alfa Romeo 4C is also fitted with Launch Control for easy high-performance standing starts.
Of course, it is best to drive the car in its most aggressive mode ('Race' in its Alfa DNA selector) or else the 4C can feel slightly blunt. While the car is packed with lots of technology, Alfa made a bold but respected move to let the driver steer the car without power steering so that driver gets the best possible steering feel.
In keeping with the times, thanks to multiple injection control and advanced anti-friction and energy loss reduction systems, the emissions of the Alfa Romeo 4C fall well within the strict limits of Euro 6 despite its huge performance potential. |
