Electric self-driving cars and parcel delivery via drones could all be in the pipeline at the upcoming Jurong Innovation District.
The new development comes as JTC and Hyundai Motor Group have singed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop optimised mobility options for Singapore's next generation industrial and business parks such through transport modeling.
Only the use of electric and autonomous vehicles have been outlined for the district, but we won't be surprised to see the use of robotic last-mile solutions As part of the new partnership, the Hyundai Group will utilise its mobility expertise and develop transport models based on its analysis of Jurong Innovation District's transport demands. JTC will in turn, provide the necessary data to support the study.
The results of this study will then be used to optimise transport flows for the district, which could mean that conventional roads will be repurposed for individuals, businesses, or greenery. The Hyundai Group additionally states that it hopes to use the results of the study to develop smart mobility options which may be deployed in next generation industrial estates.
Expect to see the use of electric as well as autonomous vehicles as part of the mobility solutions proposed for the district. The automotive manufacturer has been aggressive in its push for greater popularity of electric vehicles in Singapore, and is already set to develop its own innovation centre within the Jurong Innovation District, from which electric cars are set to be manufactured.
The firm has also displayed an increasing investment into the robotics sector with its acquisition of U.S.A-based robotics firm Boston Dynamics, alongside an increasing interest in the field of urban air mobility.
Kia, the second major automotive brand within the Hyundai Group also announced early in 2021 that it plans to launch at least seven new electric vehicles globally by 2027, all built atop dedicated electric vehicle platforms.
