Van bursts into flames outside Paragon Shopping Centre

A van burst into flames near a taxi stand outside Paragon Shopping Centre in Orchard Road on Monday. No one was injured in the incident.
A spokesperson for the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told The Straits Times they received a call requesting for assistance at around 11:10am. The fire was extinguished using one water jet. The cause of the incident is being investigated.
Cases of vehicle fires have been on the rise, with 114 incidents in the first half of 2014 - 20 percent more than the same period last year. The SCDF said most of the fires occurred while the vehicles were travelling on the road, and were caused by electrical faults and overheating of components within the engine compartment.
The SCDF advised motorists to service their vehicles regularly and to ensure that electrical, engine and fuel systems are checked for defects.
