More ERP gantries, higher rates to curb heavy traffic. Yes again.

Transport Minister Raymond Lim announced the expansion of electronic road pricing (ERP) “checkpoints” in the government's effort to keep Singapore 's roads moving smoothly.

16 new gantries will start to deduct money from road users between April and November, bringing the total number in operation to 71.

Mr. Lim mentioned ERPs as the necessary evil, citing the fact that Singaporeans would be spending many hours in massive traffic jams without the use of “pay-per-use” road pricing, just like people in Tokyo , Los Angeles and many other cities of the USA .

LTA has carefully studied the traffic situation, and will introduce additional ERP gantries in the city area in hopes of better traffic management and reduced congestion. The approximate aread of these gantries will run along the Singapore River , starting from Clemenceau Avenue and going through Fullerton Road .

The Land Transport Authority will raise the incremental ERP charge from $0.50 to $1, with new, yet to be operational gantries incurring a minimum, base charge of $2.

These changes are aimed to effectively strengthen the ERP system, so that each time ERP rates are adjusted, motorists who have to drive on these roads would see a visible improvement in traffic flow.

The changes will be implemented from July 2008, after improvements are made to increase the frequency of bus and MRT services. Bus services are scheduled to be increased from 42 services to at least 72 by June 2008. The frequency of MRT trips will rise to 93 train trips a week during the morning and evening peak periods from February.
