Mercedes-Benz laps Goodwood hill in two iconic Gullwing cars

Two special three-pointed star badged cars attended the Goodwood Festival of Speed. They are the mighty 300 SLR 'Uhlenhaut' Coupe - built in 1955, and its modern successor - the SLS AMG GT.

Uhlenhaut famously used the 300 SLR Coupe as his everyday car. Just two examples were created and both feature a similar 3.0-litre, 310bhp capable engine as the 300 SLR race car.
58 years later in the present day, we have the SLS AMG GT - a revised coupe from the 'standard' SLS AMG - which is powered by a potent hand built 6.3-litre V8 developing 591bhp.
Its adaptive damping has been revised to ensure sharper responses while its sophisticated AMG Speedshift DCT-7 gearbox has been uprated to allow swift gear changes.
The SLS AMG GT hits the century mark in just 3.7 seconds before reaching an electronically limited maximum speed of 318km/h.
Both cars are front-engined, rear-wheel driven and equipped with iconic 'gullwing' doors. Moreover each car features extensive use of aluminium, which increases strength despite a trim package and are fitted with a hand-built, eight-cylinder engine.

Nicknamed after the creator of the 300 SLR, Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the 'Uhlenhaut' Coupe was based on highly successful racers, most famous for the Mille Miglia victory piloted by Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson.
