Audi has announced that Audi FAW NEV is now on course to manufacture all-electric vehicles based on the firm's PPE platform for the Chinese market.

The announcement comes as the firm begins construction of a new production site in the northern Chinese metropolis of Changchun, set to be the first automotive plant in China where only all-electric Audi models roll off the line.

The new plant will take up an area close to 150 hectares, making it slightly larger than Audi's Neckarsulm site once completed. The site will host a press shop, body shop, paint shop, and vehicle assembly line, alongside battery assembly facility, where Audi will manufacture the high-voltage batteries used in its China-specific PPE models.

Audi states that the site will create close to 3,000 new jobs, and also serve as the headquarters of the Audi FAW NEV. Production is slated to start with three models from the Audi A6 e-tron (read our article on the Audi A6 e-tron concept here) and the Audi Q6 e-tron series, and the factory is designed to produce more than 150,000 vehicles a year.
