03-02-2015  |  's Review
The increasing rate of vehicle accidents on our roads has put the in-car video recorder in the spotlight. We find out more about this tiny gadget. While the BlackVue DR-500GW-HD may look just like its predecessors, it is now imbued with WiFi sharing technology, which allows users to view live, as well as to watch recording - wirelessly. Review
I have installed this in my car for more than 5 months now. The most important reason why I choose this particular model is because of its 24hrs surveillance capability, instead of just the normal driving recording function found in many other recorder. With this, situations such as hit-and-run and vehicle vandalism can be recorded.

The WiFi capability is another feature that makes this product great. Connecting the device with smartphones (iOS or Android), and the user is able to download videos to the phone. The phone can also be used to modify settings of the device through the phone.

What I like
24hrs surveillance capability (with optional battery pack or battery draining prevention device)
Concealed wiring installation (No dangling wires here and there)
WiFi capability

What I do not like
Quite expensive

I am really surprised to read all good reviews about this dashcam. My installation of Blackvue DR550GW-2CH was done last August by one of the authorised dealers in this forum. I had both front and back cameras installed and GPS enabled. Here is a list of problems that I encountered to date:
1. Recording just stopped for no reason.
2. Overheating caused device to shut down completely. Cannot be restarted before cooling off for a few hours.
3. Blue or Green tint on images.
4. Wrong time stamp - To me, this flaw is damaging. All your recording will become irrelevant if the time stamp is wrong. You simply cannot use the footage as evidence in the event of an incident.
I am sure some bros will say that I have bad luck. But I don't think so, please check out other forums in other countries and you will find what I mentioned above are true. I just want other forummers to do more research before investing in Blackvue dashcam.

What I like
- Wifi enabled. But, it does not work all the time.
- GPS enabled. But, the time stamp does not get updated. What's the point?

What I do not like
- Reliability is zero.

Review
I have installed BlackVue DR500GW-HD in myVolvo XC 90 last week. The lens is fully intelligent and quickly adjusts exposure levels for varying dynamic ranges. When facing low sun, vehicle license plates, road signs, and details in the sky are still fully visible. During the night time recoding, it is not as good as day time but it is quite good considering this is a 2MP CMOS. The latest software, I found it perfectly easy to navigate and apply custom settings. The audio is legible enough for me, but the tone is quite dull.

What I like
The lens enable fast adjustment for the exposure levels for varying dynamic ranges.

What I do not like
The tone is quite dull

Was deciding the DR500GW-HD over the ITB100HD. Finally decided to go with the Blackvue due to offer on Qoo10 and the WIFI feature.
My observation after having it for 4 weeks:
VQ (Day): 7/10
VQ (Night): 7/10
VQ (Parking mode in MSCP): 7/10
Minimal choppy recordings during driving.
No overheating issues so far after parking under the hot sun for hours.

What I like
Sleek, cylindrical design.
WIFI
No overheating issues
Able to flash to custom firmwares.

What I do not like
VQ not as good as the ones posted by maker on youtube.

Love the cylindrical design of the blackvue DR500 HD model and its flexibility of rotating the gadget, thus allowing me to adjust the angle. Good video quality with high definition. Recording time seems to be longer as compared to other video recorder.

What I like
Wifi App feature and good camera angle width.

What I do not like
Normal night mode vision. Expect better ones.

After reading some many accident reporting cases, I upgraded my current blackbox to get additional sense of insured. Good clarify and video quality. I kinda like the design of blackvue blackboxs, as they usually look sleek and unique.

What I like
Does not have overheating issue as compared to other blackboxs.

Review
Just got this about two weeks ago. So far I have extracted the videos out a couple of times to check on the quality for day view and night view as I have past experience with some cheaper DVRs and even during the day, the footage weren't exactly clear, numberplate unable to view unless closeup (like with the front car directly close). I have been satisfied to date. Videos are clear with no visible glare or fog.

Camera is rather small and compact.

Wide angle view is fantastic.

What I like
Wide angle view

What I do not like
Heard of possible overheating issues but so far, everything has been good.

One of the best in car camera. Able to works with even when your car engine is off. ( If only you installed the power bank ) Specially great when you are parking in a neighborhood carpark or etc able to video down other vehicle number down clearly. Don't have to worry for hit and run or people do something to your beloved car.

This cam is compact and it feels solid. The video quality is super clear during daytime and in low-light conditions, it's still better than many other cameras out there. The audio recording quality is pleasingly crisp and clear too. It doesn't have a screen built-in, but I used wifi to link the camera to my Samsung Galaxy S4 and turned it into a screen for the camera via the app available. Unlike the older models, this cam only gets warm and not hot after recording and isn't very sensitive to heat. My few complaints about this cam is that there's a fish-eye effect upon replay due to the 140 degree lens, and that the windscreen reflection is very obvious upon replay. Also, the pirce is quite steep.

What I like
Compact and solid body build. Very good daytime &l ow-light video & image quality, a lot less heat sensitive, Android & Apple app to view and download recorded videos.

What I do not like
Expensive, annoying fish-eye effect and obvious windscreen reflection.

The design is very compact and discreet. I have it hidden away nicely and nobody has noticed it. The video quality in well lit conditions is super sharp and clear, and even though the dim light video quality is not as good, it still can make it. It has never overheated on me so far, even after parking out in the open for lunch on a super hot day. Additionally, the Android app available for this unit lets me view footage easily on my Galaxy smartphone.

However I didn't like the too wide angle of the lens as the video can look a bit weird sometimes. Also, it's very expensive.
