VW chairman Ferdinand Piech, a motorcycle enthusiast himself, missed an opportunity to buy the company years ago, and will be happy with the purchase. With the sale, Volkswagen has another Italian 'trophy' along with Lamborghini and Italdesign-Giugiaro.
Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AudiI AG, declared, "Ducati is known worldwide as a premium brand among motorcycle manufacturers and has a long tradition of building sporty motorcycles. It has great expertise in high-performance engines and lightweight construction, and is one of the world's most profitable motorcycle manufacturers. That makes Ducati an excellent fit for Audi."
The technology involved in building the engines, the sporty character, and Ducati's extensive expertise in lightweight construction offers a great potential for Audi and Volkswagen. Peter Mosch, Chairman of the General Works Council of AUDI AG commented how everyone at Audi is looking forward to working with their new colleagues from Ducati.

Ducati has manufacturing operations at its headquarters in Bologna, Italy and at its factory in Thailand. Experts have predicted the motorcycle market will enjoy growth over the next few years, especially in Asia. Last year, Ducati sold close to 42,000 motorcycles, generating revenue of some €480 (S$ 788)million.
The company was founded as Società Scientifica Radiobrevetti Ducati in 1926 by three brothers - Adriano, Marcello and Bruno Ducati in Bologna, Italy and built parts for radios. It eventually ventured into manufacturing motorcycles in 1949.
Like Ferrari with its F1 programme through its Scuderia division, Ducati has been actively involved in motorcycle racing for many decades through its racing division Ducati Corse. Its racing activities are focused on MotoGP and the Superbike World Championships, supporting private teams. Ducati has won a combined number of 31 manufacturers' championships for both racing activities.
Perhaps to celebrate the occasion, Ducati and Audi can produce cross-over products like a flagship sports bike called the Diavel R8 or Audi could have a special edition RS Monster sport package. Just saying. What we are more interested is, how will this merger affect Ducati’s current relationship with Mercedes-Benz AMG?

In 1998, VW purchased Lamborghini and in 14 years, the raging bull has been transformed to a manufacturer with soaring profits besides expanding products into new segments and significantly increasing ownership. In 1997, Lamborghini sold 209 Diablos. Ten years later, they sold 2,580 Murcielagos and Gallardos. Under VW’s ownership, in no way the Lamborghini brand has been compromised where Lamborghini is healthier and produces more appealing products than Ferruccio could ever dream of. This is what we can expect of Ducati’s future in ten years’ time.
