Motorola may have its ups and downs in the mobile phone business, but the Bluetooth accessory group has been steadily churning out stylish Bluetooth headsets with good performance, and the Motorola H790 is no exception. Built on Moto's CrystalTalk technology, the Motorola H790 is impossibly thin and light. The headset has Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR and works with cell phones via Hands-free or Headset Bluetooth profiles. It has a super strong DSP that can filter out road noise and room noise, and its audio quality is clear and loud. As a mid-range headset with list price of $80, the Motorola H790 offers good features and quality for the money.

Pairing and Features With newer versions of Bluetooth, headsets are easier to pair with phones and computers than ever. The Motorola H790 has Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR and it can auto pair with your cell phone with voice prompts. When you slide the power button to turn on the headset for the first time, the H790 will go into pairing mode (LED flashing solid blue) and the voice prompt will tell you the headset is "ready to pair". Use your phone to find and pair with the headset - the headset actually tells you the default pass code "0000" in case your phone doesn't have an auto-pairing feature. The voice prompt will notify you when the pairing is complete. The Motorola H790 can work with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously, a handy feature for users who separate their work phones and weekend phones.
The Motorola H790 Bluetooth headset supports all Hands-free features including last number dialing, call waiting, accepting or rejecting calls, as well as muting outgoing voice during a call. The headset also tracks the two phones you have paired it with and can simultaneously work with both and give voice prompts for activities on both phones.
Voice Quality and Range The Motorola H790 has CrystalTalk technology and dual microphones for noise canceling and generating clearer voice on both incoming and outgoing ends. The DSP works very efficiently at blocking almost all road noise, outdoor and room noise. The voice quality is very good: it sounds clear and loud. We tested the H790 Bluetooth headset with many phones including the iPhone 3GS, the T-Mobile myTouch 3G, the Sony Ericsson C905 and the Samsung Omnia HD unlocked on AT&T. In our area, the T-Mobile phones sounded as clear as a cell phone can sound via the Motorola H790 headset, and the volume was very loud. The AT&T phones had some audio distortion and the volume wasn't very high compared to the TMO phones, and this is likely the network's fault. Sprint and Verizon phones also sounded good but had a little distortion as well via the Motorola. The overall voice quality via the Moto H790 was very good and the DSP worked very effectively on all phones in our tests.
The range between the Moto H790 and cell phones is middle of the road, reaching about 10-20 feet before voice quality starts to deteriorate and generate audio distortion.
Battery Life The Motorola H790 has a built-in rechargeable battery that has very good battery life by small headset standards. The claimed talk time is 5 hours and the claimed standby time is 7 days. Our battery tests showed that these numbers were mostly on target. The Moto H790 takes about 2.5 hours to charge and the LED light will turn green when the headset is fully charged. The headset comes with a micro USB style world charger that has Rapid Charging technology that can generate about 2-2.5 hours of usage time in a 15-minute charging session.
